Giant towelettes head to space station TEA, S.D. Oversized moist towelettes that have been helping overseas soldiers freshen up in battlefields devoid of showers have embarked on a more celestial mission. A shipment of specially compressed and dehydrated Klenz towels hitched a ride aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on Monday for use by U.S. astronauts aboard the International Space Station. NASA found the South Dakota company while searching the Internet for U.S. hygiene towels similar to what the Russians were sending up to their cosmonauts, said Jessica Fichuk, a NASA project manager. Astronauts can rip open the foil packages, pour four ounces of water onto the 2-foot-by-3-foot cloths and be ready to clean up within seconds.

“Just like when you are camping, these are what you use when you don’t have access to a shower,” Fichuk said. The idea for the “Klenz XXL Shower in a Towel” came to Hartford, S.D.-native Troy Edberg in 1993 while he was a U.S. Marine on patrol in Somalia, where soldiers were struggling to find any available baby wipes to keep clean. “We’d be out for 10 days without a shower,” Edberg said. “We’d have like a wet wipe or something, a little one.” Edberg figured it’d make more sense to have one big towel instead of having to burn through 80 smaller ones, but he didn’t pursue the idea until 2004 when he pitched it to Vince McCormick, owner of the Hartford, S.D., health and fitness center where he worked out. McCormick loved the idea, but it took nearly four years to bring the product to the market. Soldiers told McCormick they wanted something big enough to clean their backs and whole bodies, and they didn’t want to be left smelling like a baby or feeling sticky or dry. “We’ve got guys out in the desert and stuff,” McCormick said. “The last thing we need to do is put alcohol in it and dry them out.” McCormick found an environmentally friendly, biodegradable material made of grass and wood called HydroKnit, and he settled on a fragrance-free, residue-free cleaning solution with a common anti-bacterial agent and aloe. Finding a company to make the towels proved to be a greater challenge. “We had to basically take a tablecloth manufacturer and a wet wipe manufacturer and kind of combine them,” McCormick said. Edberg and McCormick then brought in another partner, Dollar Loan Center owner Keith Bergh, and the team spent a year-and-a-half test marketing the 2-foot-by-4-foot wet towels, sending them to 30 different countries and handing them out to riders at the Sturgis motorcycle rally. “We sent it to Afghanistan,” McCormick said. “We sent it to Iraq, South America, Alaska.” McCormick then began the paperwork to get a contract with the U.S. General Services Administration, which arranges sales from the private sector to government organizations and the military. He also decided to get them in the field sooner by donating $50,000 worth of Klenz Towels to Operation USO Care Package. The gamble paid off, as less than a half year later Klenz became partners with the USO and now serves as its hygiene product provider. Some 500,000 of the towels have since found their way into soldiers’ hands. Klenz’s retail version of its towels, for use in camping, fishing, hunting, hiking and biking, sell for $4.25 each on the company’s Web site.

US Marines partner with Klenz-Direct.com
Klenz has announced its partnership with the U.S. Marines. Klenz is specialized in creating oversized moist towel that is designed to produce a refreshing effect. The partnership with the U.S. Marines allows Klenz to provide moist towel for the soldiers that are assigned to the battlefields in foreign countries. Since there is limited availability of water in the battlefield, the soldiers have no access to the showers.
Klenz was responsible for the shipment of compressed Klenz towel to the International Space Station. The dehydrated towel was ordered for use by U.S. astronauts.
According to Nasa project manager, Jessuca Fichuk, NASA came across Klenz while one of the officer was performing a research on the internet for wet towels. Klenz’s moistened towels are the exactly same thing that the Russians had sent up to the cosmonauts. On the space shuttle, it is impossible to take a shower. With Klenz’s moistened towels, the astronauts can quickly clean their body within minutes. To use the towel, the astronaut rip open the foil package and pour 4 ounces of water on it. Within a few seconds, the astronauts are cleaned up. Fichuk pointed out that the moistened towels are also suitable for people who are going for camping.
Klenz was a result of Troy Edberg’s encounter while he was patrolling in Somalia. During that time, the soldiers couldn’t find any available wet wipes to clean themselves. Edberg and other soldiers had been on patrol for 10 days. They had not taken a bath and would be grateful if they can have a wet wipe.
After the incident, Edberg decided to start a company that sell wet wipe. Instead of producing 80 small wet wipes, it is more convenient to have one big towel. The big wet towel can be used to clean the backs and bodies effectively. Edberg did not take action for his idea until the year 2004. In the beginning, he pitches the idea to Vince McCormick.
McCormick liked the idea and he approved it. He discovers a residue free cleaning solution called HydroKnit. HydroKnit is a green product that can be easily biodegrade. In addition, it has an anti bacterial agent which makes it suitable for cleaning the body.
Before Klenz can produce the wet wipe, they need a tablecloth and wet wipe manufacturer. They met with another business partner called Keith Bergh. Keith Berg is the CEO of Dollar Loan Center. Later, they conduct test marketing for the wet towels by dispatching free samples to soldiers in overseas countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Alaska. They also provide free samples to the Sturgis motorcycle rally.
Mc Cormick signed a contract to sell the wet towels to the private sector, government sector and military units. To promote its brand, Mc Cormick decides to donate $50,000 worth of towels to the USO. The families are often worried about their loved ones who are fighting overseas. The USO has sympathy on the families and decided to do a favor for them. The USO was established in 1941.The establishment of USO was first suggested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The private organization will address to the need of the increasing growth of the United States armed forces. The call of President Franklin has caused 6 civilian agencies to join him establishing the organization. The new organization is called United Service Organization (USO). The six civilian agencies that are involved in building the organization include Salvation Army USA, YMCA, YWCA, NCCS, National Travelers Aid Association and JWB. The USO move its headquarter office to New York on the 4th February 1941. The USO is operated and maintained by a private entity so they need the support from the public and corporations.
In the Second World War, the USO had open many centers to accommodate the need of the U.S. troops overseas. Due to limited funds, the USO centers are opened in several places such as churches, barns, old mansions and etc. In 1944, there are already approximately 3000 clubs.
By 1947, most of the USO centers are disbanded. In 1950, The USO had regroup their centers and successfully opened 24 clubs around the world. After the draft ended in 1970s, the United Way of America and the Department of Defense had visited the USO military bases worldwide. They finally concluded the need for a USO operation.
It currently have over 130 centers in Columbia. Thousands of people from around the globe had volunteered to work at the USO center. With these facilities, the military families are able to visit the USO centers on a regular basis. USO had opened many centers in places where the troops are sent including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait.
In 1990, the United States are confronted with the power of Iraq. Consequently, several U.S. troops are sent to Iraq. There are very few recreation in that place. The USO responded to this circumstance by opening mobile canteens which contain refreshments, books, and etc. Later, the USO organizes two programs including Operation USO Care Package and USO Operation Phone Home. Through the programs more than 1,000,000 care packages are sent to Iraq. In addition, the USO had also distributed two million phone cards to the soldiers.
Besides the USO also established the Family Support Fund and Desert Storm Education Fund to offer comfort to military families who recently experience the death of a member. When the troops return to the U.S, the USO organize the Yellow Ribbon Summer for families of active service members.

10 Tips to keep clean in times of disaster

During a disaster, there is limited water so washing yourself can become troublesome. Though it is hard to find water, it is still important to wash your hand and body to prevent contracting with diseases.

Emergency workers work in a dangerous circumstance which demands their immediate response. They are vulnerable to the experiencing a traumatic accident because of the pressure to save the lives of injured people, and handling dead bodies.
It is important for the emergency workers to recover from the trauma quickly at the scene.
